Eagles running back race coming down to the wire

Undrafted rookie Corey Clement, left, has had an impressive preseason and could hold the edge for the final running back spot. Bill Streicher/USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles must cut their roster to 53 by 4 p.m. ET Saturday, Sept. 2. Here’s a final 53-man roster projection:

Quarterbacks (2): Carson Wentz, Nick Foles

Foles has had trouble getting his sore elbow back to 100 percent. The Eagles could be tempted to keep a third quarterback, such as current reserve Matt McGloin, if they remain concerned about Foles' health.

Running backs (4): LeGarrette Blount, Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood, Corey Clement

The Eagles haven't cut a fourth-round pick out of training camp since releasing safety Damien Robinson in 1997. History is on Donnel Pumphrey's side, then. Clement is an undrafted rookie but has had the better summer and is moving up the depth chart on special teams. The house is divided on this one. We'll give the edge to Clement with the thought that the Eagles will successfully find a way to stash Pumphrey.

Wide receiver (5): Alshon Jeffery, Torrey Smith, Nelson Agholor, Mack Hollins, Marcus Johnson

The Jordan Matthews trade opens up a spot for Johnson. Former Houston quarterback Greg Ward, fifth-round pick Shelton Gibson and Bryce Treggs will be among those in consideration if the Eagles carry six wideouts.

Tight end (4): Zach Ertz, Brent Celek, Trey Burton, Billy Brown

Brown seems to be right on the bubble. He has some fans internally. A judgement call will have to be made on whether the undrafted rookie out of Shepherd would make it to the practice squad.

Offensive line (9): Jason Peters, Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, Brandon Brooks, Isaac Seumalo, Chance Warmack, Stefen Wisniewski, Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Dillon Gordon

The front office traded versatile linemen Allen Barbre and Matt Tobin this offseason. If the Eagles keep 10 offensive linemen, tackle Taylor Hart, guard Dallas Thomas or interior lineman Josh Andrews could find their way on.

Defensive line (10): Brandon Graham, Fletcher Cox, Tim Jernigan, Vinny Curry, Chris Long, Derek Barnett, Destiny Vaeao, Beau Allen, Elijah Qualls, DE Steven Means

Means just signed a one-year extension with the team, a good sign that he will be part of the 53-man. Alex McCalister has intriguing athleticism and upside. Perhaps they can sneak him onto the practice squad.

Linebacker (6): Jordan Hicks, Nigel Bradham, Mychal Kendricks, Najee Goode, Kamu Grugier-Hill, Joe Walker

Fifth-round pick Nathan Gerry is currently dealing with an injured hamstring. If he receives an injury designation or makes the practice squad, it opens things up for other veterans/special-teams contributors.

Cornerback (6): Jalen Mills, Ronald Darby, Rasul Douglas, Dexter McDougle, Patrick Robinson, Jaylen Watkins

Second-year player C.J. Smith also has a chance to make the roster.

Safety (4): Malcolm Jenkins, Rodney McLeod, Chris Maragos, Corey Graham

Watkins can also play some safety, which could help his chances.

Specialists (3): Caleb Sturgis, Donnie Jones, Rick Lovato

Lovato replaces Jon Dorenbos at long-snapper. Dorenbos was the longest-tenured Eagle before being traded to the New Orleans Saints.
