Alinghi wins Extreme Sailing series title

SYDNEY -- Swiss team Alinghi clinched the Extreme Sailing series on the final day of competition in Sydney Harbour on Sunday, with skipper Arnaud Psarofaghis holding off a late attempt from archrival Oman Air to win the title.

It was the third time Alinghi has won the Extreme Sailing series following victories in 2008 and 2014, but the first time it has done it aboard the speedy GC32 catamarans.

Alinghi started the final day with a 19-point lead on Oman Air. The victory was guaranteed only after the 24th and penultimate race of the series, with Alinghi's fourth place ahead of Oman Air in fifth finally giving it the series edge.
