49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said team is bringing RB Alfred Morris in to provide depth amidst injuries at position. Morris still needs to pass physical but expected to join team in Houston. Running backs Jerick McKinnon (calf) and Matt Breida (shoulder) are not available this week for joint practices with the Texans and a preseason game on Saturday.

The injury bug has been attacking the 49ers during training camp but they continue to avoid serious, long-term issues that could carry into the regular season. They did it again Sunday when RB Jerick McKinnon hurt his right knee in practice and went for an MRI. That MRI showed a calf strain. McKinnon will rest this week (and miss joint practices and preseason game against the Texans) and then be re-evaluated next week.

Some highlights from 49ers' Sunday session: QB Jimmy Garoppolo had a mostly strong practice. Threw a perfect deep ball for big gain to Aldrick Robinson during move the ball period and had multiple connections with Marquise Goodwin, Trent Taylor and Pierre Garcon. Threaded the needle to Taylor in tight space for a touchdown in red zone work... CB Jimmie Ward had a couple of pass breakups... FS Adrian Colbert had an interception on an ill-advised throw from Garoppolo... Raheem Mostert had a good day filling in at running back.

The 49ers got relatively good news on the injury front Friday after a flurry of ailments hit the team in the preseason opener against Dallas. Coach Kyle Shanahan said the expectation is that all six players hurt Thursday night (RB Matt Breida, TE George Kittle, DL Solomon Thomas, OT Garry Gilliam, LB Eli Harold and LB Malcolm Smith) will be available for Week 1 against the Vikings. Kittle and Breida suffered separated shoulders and will miss the rest of the preseason but they will aim to have them both ready to start the regular season. Thomas and Gilliam are in the concussion protocol, Harold has a bruised knee and Smith is dealing with a hamstring issue. None will be rushed back.

No word on severity of LB Malcolm Smith's hamstring injury.

Prescott throws for TD before 49ers rally past Cowboys 24-21

There's nothing more important in a preseason game than coming out of it as healthy as possible, at least when it comes to your starters. To that end, the 49ers had something of a disastrous night against the Dallas Cowboys. Despite planning to play their starters for only a series or two, the Niners watched as three projected starters and two key backups departed suffered various ailments. Linebacker Malcolm Smith (hamstring), tight end George Kittle (shoulder), defensive lineman Solomon Thomas (head), running back Matt Breida (shoulder) and tackle Garry Gilliam (head) left with injuries and did not return to the game. The extent of those injuries remain to be seen but it's still alarming to see so many of them this early, especially given how many health issues the 49ers dealt with last season. For a roster that is still in need of proven depth, any injuries to starters before the season begins are cause for concern.

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo played one series (9 snaps) before calling it a night. He finished 3-of-6 for 34 yards with two completions going for first downs on third down.

The first quarter has been a disaster for the 49ers from an injury standpoint. LB Malcolm Smith (hamstring) and TE George Kittle (shoulder) departed before DL Solomon Thomas went down. Thomas was down for a bit but was able to walk to the locker room under his own power. Three key players lost in a little more than 10 minutes. The extent of those injuries is not yet known.

No 49ers players knelt during the national anthem before Thursday night's preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. WR Marquise Goodwin stood with his right fist raised.

49ers not expected to play tonight, per team: DL Arik Armstead, G Jonathan Cooper, LB Brock Coyle, OL JP Flynn, G Joshua Garnett, S Marcell Harris, CB Richard Sherman, WR Trent Taylor, LB Fred Warner, TE Cole Wick, CB K'Waun Williams. All of have dealt with injuries of varying degrees over the past few weeks.

The Niners' plan for playing time on Thursday night against Dallas is to play the starters about a series each. There will be some leeway there based on how those first series go and some of the younger guys might get a bit more work.

Nick Wagoner ESPN Staff Writer

Jonathan Cooper continues to work back into the mix at right guard, getting some reps with the starters on Tuesday. Shanahan said Cooper probably isn't ready yet to work with first team in a game but they're encouraged by his recent progress. Long way to go in that competition as Joshua Garnett hopes to return from a knee injury soon also.
