The Saints ruled out LT Terron Armstead for the fifth straight game Monday night at Carolina. Armstead returned to practice on a limited basis last week and practiced again this Wednesday and Thursday on a limited basis. But he is apparently making a gradual return from his pectoral injury.

Drew Brees went the extra mile to show his appreciation to dozens of his past and present receivers, offensive linemen, coaches and mentors for the part they played in him breaking the NFL career passing-yardage record.

The Saints signed undrafted rookie WR Simmie Cobbs Jr. from the Redskins practice squad on Friday after waiving TE Erik Swoope with a failed physical designation. The Saints claimed Swoope after he was waived by the Colts, but he never practiced with New Orleans because he failed his physical.

Jermon Bushrod was voted by his teammates as the Saints' 2018 Ed Block Courage Award winner – which is given to a player from each team that has persevered through adversity. Bushrod and his wife Jessica lost their newborn daughter, Jordyn, earlier this season. After missing some time to be with his family, Bushrod returned and wound up starting the last four games in place of injured left tackle Terron Armstead.

Newton: 'Disrespectful' broom a boost vs. Saints

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said the broom hanging in his locker, something that was "gifted'' to him last season after the Saints swept three games against their NFC South rival, is motivation for Monday's night's game against New Orleans.

Sean Payton said the decision to release WR Brandon Marshall was because they needed a roster spot when they wanted to claim TE Erik Swoope — and because "we feel like (WR Ted Ginn Jr.) is close to coming back." Payton said the Saints "still might be in a position" to bring Marshall back at some point, but for now they needed the roster spot.

Taysom Hill was named the NFC's Special Teams Player of the Week for his blocked punt that lifted the Saints out of their two-week slump on Sunday at Tampa Bay. The Saints were losing 14-3 midway through the third quarter. Then after the block, they went on a 25-0 run.

The Saints placed backup offensive lineman Michael Ola on injured reserve after he was hurt in Sunday's win at Tampa Bay. They added veteran tackle Derek Newton, who was a starter for five years with the Texans before rupturing the patellar tendon in both knees in 2016, which sidelined him for all of 2017 as well.

When we think of the Saints, we think offense. But they actually rank second in the NFL in scoring defense over the past 11 weeks at 18.0 points per game.

The Eagles are expected to sign rookie RB Boston Scott off the Saints' practice squad, pending a physical, adding depth in the wake of Corey Clement's Sunday knee injury. A source confirmed the news, which was first reported by the NFL Network. At 5-foot-6, Scott was the shortest player selected in this year's NFL draft when the Saints took him in the sixth round out of Louisiana Tech. The 203-pounder ran for 1,047 yards and scored nine touchdowns as a senior. Then he ran for 121 yards and a TD in the preseason, while also returning kickoffs for the Saints.

Saints CB Marshon Lattimore ends their 28-14 victory over Tampa Bay with a fantastic toe-tapping interception in the end zone with one second left -- allowing him to one-up Bucs WR Mike Evans in their rivalry. The Saints wound up outscoring Tampa Bay 25-0 after Taysom Hill's blocked punt. What a turnaround. That will allow them to properly celebrate their second straight NFC South title for the first time in franchise history. More importantly, it gives them their mojo back after last week's 13-10 loss at Dallas.
