Linebacker David Harris has been assigned No. 51 with the Patriots. His role/skill set is similar to former Patriots LB Jerod Mayo, who also wore No. 51 during his playing days. Harris was No. 52 with the Jets. A related jersey note: Undrafted rookie LB Brooks Ellis had been No. 51, but has been switched to No. 47 to accommodate Harris.

Patriots captain Matthew Slater was a special guest speaker at the Pine Street Inn "graduation" on Friday. The Pine Street Inn has a goal of ending homelessness and it honored its graduates that completed job training programs in food services and housekeeping. Slater's message to graduates focused on responding in a positive way to adversity.

To make room on the roster for LB David Harris, the Patriots released WR DeAndrew White. An Alabama alum who spent time on the Patriots' practice squad last year, White plays a position at which the Patriots are especially deep.

Why Derek Carr got the big bucks

Since Carr entered the league, only Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Russell Wilson have been better at producing touchdowns and avoiding interceptions. Each has been paid handsomely in that time frame, while Carr was still on his rookie contract.
