Vote: What is the Patriots' biggest draft need?

The Patriots don't have a draft pick until Round 3, but there are still several directions the defending champs could go in the upcoming draft. What should be New England's plan?

Mike Reiss ESPN Staff Writer

Two of the Patriots' all-time best players on and off the field -- Andre Tippett and Matthew Slater -- are scheduled to announce the team's third-round picks at the NFL Draft. Tippett was chosen as part of the NFL Legends Community, while Slater gets the nod as a past team winner of the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

Mike Triplett ESPN Staff Writer

Sean Payton said he thinks this is deepest defensive draft he's seen as Saints head coach – which is good, since he said it's "no secret" that the Saints' top goal this year is to improve their defense. … As for the possible Malcolm Butler trade, Payton said, "It's nothing new. Look, he's with New England, and I don't think anything's changed. I don't see anything being imminent."

Lawyers file to clear Hernandez conviction

Lawyers for former NFL star Aaron Hernandez formally asked a court on Tuesday to dismiss his first-degree murder conviction now that he has died.

One follow-up note on the Patriots surrendering a fifth-round draft pick to Buffalo for restricted free-agent running back Mike Gillislee: The selection going to Buffalo is No. 163 overall, which the Patriots had acquired from Denver last year in a trade for TE AJ Derby. So this is basically a Gillislee for Derby trade.

Mike Reiss ESPN Staff Writer

With the Bills declining to match the Patriots' two-year, $6.4 million offer sheet to running back Mike Gillislee, this means the Patriots now have Gillislee, James White, Dion Lewis, Rex Burkhead, D.J. Foster and Brandon Bolden at running back. It's a crowded stable and likely means the door is closed on LeGarrette Blount's return.

The Bills have declined to match the Patriots' two-year, $6.4 million offer sheet to restricted free agent RB Mike Gillislee, source tells ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. That means Bills are down to LeSean McCoy, Jonathan Williams, Joe Banyard and Cedric O'Neal at running back. Becomes a possible mid-round draft need for Buffalo, which has opened about $1.8 million in 2017 cap space.
