Mike Pettine on why he didn't show much of the defense in the preseason opener: "I've been that coordinator (who blitzed like crazy in first preseason game) before. We wanted to see who could line up and play and win their one-on-one matchup. We didn't want to disguise anything with scheme."

As much as Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin liked Jimmy Graham's one-handed TD catch yesterday in practice, he loved that Graham was the first person over to check on WR Geronimo Allison when he went down in the same drill. The touchdowns, Philbin said, are a "byproduct" of Graham's work ethic and passion for football."

Will Justin McCray end up as the Packers' new starting right guard? "I hope so," coach Mike McCarty said. "It would be nice to get [all five O-line starters] out there for a week. You want to keep the competition open, but he's definitely earned the opportunity."

Aaron Rodgers is expected to play Thursday night against the Steelers. What does that mean for Brett Hundley, DeShone Kizer and Tim Boyle -- all of whom need the work? "You'd like to play all four quarterbacks," coach Mike McCarthy said. "That would be the intent going into the game."

Rodgers: Criticism of young WRs not personal

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said no one should be offended after he ripped players' effort in a sloppy practice last week.

Aaron Rodgers said he wants to play and expects to play in Thursday's preseason game against the Steelers at Lambeau Field. He noted that it's been a long time since he played in front of the home fans — Week 3 to be exact. He got hurt on the road and played his one game in his return on the road.

If nothing else, Jimmy Graham will be a presence in the red zone: he made a one-handed grab on a fade from Aaron Rodgers over safety Martin Evans, who at 5-11 had not shot against the 6-7 Graham.

Aaron Jones (hamstring) and Kevin King (shoulder) did not finish practice. They're out of pads now and watching the final period.

Nick Perry's side work has intensified this week, a sign he's getting closer to coming off the PUP list following his offseason ankle surgery.

How much playing time should Aaron Rodgers get against the Steelers? Is Khalil Mack to Green Bay realistic? Jason Wilde joins Bryan Dee and Stephen Watson to discuss.

Good sign that RB Aaron Jones is on the field for the second straight day. Means he had no setback in his return yesterday from the hamstring injury he sustained on July 27.

Fifth-round pick Cole Madison, who never reported to training camp, is not expected back anytime soon, but GM Brian Gutekunst said he would like think the offensive lineman will play eventually. "We're fully supportive of what's going on," Gutekunst said. "He's dealing with a [personal] issue, when that issue is resolved we'll get back to the football part of it." In the meantime, Madison will remain on the did not report list.

Packers right tackle Bryan Bulaga took a big step in his return from his ACL surgery, taking live reps for the first time yesterday in practice. "He clearly took a step in the last week," coach Mike McCarthy said. He'll still be in a limited capacity but everything appears to be on track for his Week 1 availability.

Practice No. 11 ends with two spectacular deep balls — one from Boyle to Kumerow, the other from Kizer to Adams. A brisk one hour and 50 minutes on the field. Only four more training camp practices left.

Aaron Rodgers took the first reps in both team periods with the No. 1 offense, a sign he might play a little bit on Thursday against the Steelers.

Long list of players who returned to practice in at least some capacity: WR Randall Cobb (ankle) CB Kevin King (shoulder) CB Jaire Alexander (groin) RB Aaron Jones (hamstring) FB Joe Kerridge (shoulder) LT David Bakhtiari (ankle) RT Bryan Bulaga (knee)5! DT Mike Daniels (quad) TE Jimmy Graham (knee) DT Muhammad Wilkerson (groin) Bakhtiari was very limited. May have just been testing it since this would be a considered a very early return.

Left tackle David Bakhtiari, who sprained his left ankle eight days ago; is back in pads. That's an encouraging sign for one of the Packers' most important players who isn't a quarterback.
