Safety Jeff Heath left practice early with an ankle sprain. He wanted to return but defensive backs coach Kris Richard told him to stay out. Kavon Frazier replaced Heath.

The Cowboys have taken defensive tackle Maliek Collins off the physically unable to perform list as he works back from offseason surgery to repair a broken foot suffered in the spring. He has worked off to the side since the start of training camp on his rehab and conditioning. He will be worked slowly into practice, which is the norm for players coming back from injury.

The Cowboys placed guard/center Marcus Martin on injured reserve because of a toe injury he suffered in the preseason opener at San Francisco. Wide receiver Marchie Murdock (ankle)was also waived/injured. The Cowboys have signed offensive lineman Jacob Alsadek and wide receiver Darren Carrington to fill their roster spots.

Cowboys expect to have DE Gregory for opener

Jerry Jones, as Randy Gregory went through team drills for the first time, said the defensive end should be ready for the Cowboys' Sept. 9 opener against the Panthers.

The Cowboys received criticism for taking Jaylon Smith in the second round of the 2016 draft knowing he would miss his rookie season and potentially never play because of a serious knee injury suffered in his final game at Notre Dame. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Sunday, “What I'm seeing right here in practice right now, what I've seen so far, what I saw in the offseason completely justified our drafting him in the second round. Completely. He's really not only got a chance to helps us on the field, he's one of our potential cornerstones in every way, leadership as well as a player.”

For the first time in camp Randy Gregory is taking snaps in 11 on 11 drills. Working with the second team at right defensive end. He went through individual drills for the first time in Saturday.

Ezekiel Elliott believes he will be on the same preseason plan the Cowboys have had for him in his first two seasons, playing only in the third game. He is not worried about potential injuries. “I'll probably play the first series and that's how we'll handle that,” Elliott said. “I mean it's football. There's going to be injuries every time you strap up and go out there between those white lines there's going to be risk. You're going to get hurt.”

Sean Lee felt fine after his first action in team drills of training camp Saturday. He did not take part in seven-on-seven drills or the situational work at the end of practice. He said he will continue to follow the plan the athletic training staff has for him and he wants to play at least a little in the preseason. “I think it's important to play,” Lee said. “There' nothing like live reps. This league is too good. You need to be out playing against great competition to be ready and so the preseason, playing in those games is very important.”

The Randy Gregory progression continues. Last week, he put on pads in his conditioning work off to the side. Today, he is expected to go through individual drills. At some point he has to get on the field to show the Cowboys what he can do in team drills but the team is being patient.

Sources: Cowboys' Martin needs surgery on toe

Marcus Martin, who was competing for one of the Cowboys' backup interior line spots, needs surgery for a torn ligament in his toe, sources told ESPN.

For the first time in training camp, linebacker Sean Lee will take part in a full practice Saturday. The Cowboys have worked the veteran in slowly, following a similar plan they had for him during the offseason program. Lee has worked in walkthroughs and some individual drills since the Cowboys arrived in Oxnard, California, for training camp. Lee said after the San Francisco game that he hoped to play next week against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Guard Marcus Martin is facing surgery on his right big toe to repair a ligament tear suffered in the Cowboys' preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers, according to multiple sources. Right tackle La'el Collins suffered a similar injury in 2016 and missed the final 13 games of the regular season. Martin was in line to be one of the backup interior linemen after signing a one-year deal with the Cowboys as a free agent in March.

Some good for the Cowboys in their preseason loss to San Francisco: Dak Prescott, Joe Thomas, Michael Gallup, first team defense. But just enough bad to where the coaches can get on them in their final week of practice in Oxnard.

Prescott throws for TD before 49ers rally past Cowboys 24-21

Dak Prescott made the most of his brief appearance in the preseason opener for Dallas by throwing a 30-yard touchdown pass to rookie Michael Gallup before the San Francisco 49ers rallied with two late touchdowns to beat the Cowboys 24-21 Thursday night.

Todd Archer ESPN Staff Writer

In eight padded practices of training camp, the Cowboys offense struggled to make big plays in the passing game, so when Michael Gallup ran under a Dak Prescott deep ball for a 30-yard score on the quarterback's only drive of Thursday's loss to San Francisco, it was a much-needed positive. The Cowboys will have to come up with big plays through the air in the regular season to keep defenses honest with how much Ezekiel Elliott work will get running the ball. Prescott has the arm strength for the deep ball but he needs to be more consistent with the placement. The receivers have to do a better job giving him space to land the ball outside, too.
