Cairns Taipans have unveiled a major signing ahead of the looming NBL season with American Dayshon "Scoochie" Smith heading Down Under.

Smith is a 187cm point guard out of Dayton University who last year enjoyed an NBA Summer League stint with the Boston Celtics.

The 22-year-old New York City native played 136 games for Dayton and was the University's only three-time captain. He was also part of their most successful team ever and was named in the All-Atlantic 10 first-team.

"As a coach, you're always watching games on TV and people catch your eye," Taipans coach Aaron Fearne said. "I first noticed Scoochie in his senior year at Dayton - and watched him throughout the college season and NCAA tournament.

"Then he played Summer League with the Boston Celtics - he started out in Utah, but I watched him when I was in Vegas. It was good to see him playing in that environment. We liked his size and his ability to run a team."

Smith will arrive in Cairns ahead of the pre-season as the second import alongside Nnanna Egwu, and recent newcomer Kuany Kuany.
