Longtime Pirates broadcaster Blass to retire

Former pitcher Steve Blass, 76, announced that 2019 would be his last year with the Pittsburgh Pirates, after spending the last 34 years as a color analyst.

"I would figure out a way to get them to stop playing me that way," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said when asked how he would have handled the shift as a player.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle has been around for awhile, but he's open to the new-dangled opener. "We have talked about it some last year just because of the recency of what was going on, and the why. Injuries maybe it was lack of a fifth starter (play into it). The common sense of works. It's just adjusting your mentality. To go from there, it (improves) the leverage of not facing the middle of that lineup three times. We're going to see how how our internal competition works out."

We have a trade! No, not that one. The White Sox have acquired Ivan Nova from the Pirates to bolster a rotation that will be without prized prospect Michael Kopech in 2019. Nova is ... well, consistent, with ERAs of 4.17, 4.14 and 4.19 the past three seasons. He's homer-prone, so a move to Guaranteed Rate Field could be problematic. The Pirates, meanwhile, clear a spot for Nick Kingham or, later in the season, top prospect Mitch Keller.

Way-too-early 2019-20 MLB free-agent rankings

While this winter's crop searches for new homes, we look ahead to the big decisions that loom for some of the game's top stars -- Nolan Arenado, Chris Sale, Paul Goldschmidt and Gerrit Cole among them.

The Pirates added some outfield depth in signing Lonnie Chisenhall to a one-year contract for a reported $2.75 million. This could be a nice little pickup as Gregory Polanco will miss the start of the season after shoulder surgery. Chisenhall has hit .291/.347/.468 the past three seasons, although played just 29 games in 2018 due to a calf injury. Still, he looks like a solid depth piece for the Pirates as they aim to improve on last year's 82-79 record.

Your favorite team probably isn't going to get Bryce Harper or Manny Machado. But another move -- maybe for a top pitcher -- could make all the difference this winter.
