Outside Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, something I've never noticed before: A memorial to the Twin Towers alongside a small piece of structural steel. Quite literally reflective in the way the Towers were.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked what it meant to wear the Stoneman Douglas High School hat today: "It's huge. Anytime people are hurting, and we know the community is hurting right now, baseball can sometimes play a part with the healing process. And so to honor them and try and have a little bit of thoughts and prayers and our thoughts are with people who are hurting, it's something small that it was cool to be a part of."

Aaron Boone on getting his first win as a manager: "It's always good to shake hands (after a game)." He said he was pleased with how Yankees controlled the strike zone with patient at bats offensively in the 3-1 win over Detroit.

Giancarlo Stanton spoke in the Yankees' clubhouse after he was replaced in the game. Asked how this spring training opener compared to ones he had with the Marlins, he said: "Uh ... this is better?" He continued by saying it's more about the anticipation for what the Yankees can do due to the buzz around this camp.

And on the first day of the expanded netting being used at a Home Yankees spring training game, Estevan Florial's bat just slipped out his grasp and sailed OVER the netting. Thankfully, the aware fan had good hands and caught it.

Giancarlo Stanton's day is done in the top of the fifth. The new Yankee went 0-for-1 with a walk in two plate appearances. He saw 10 pitches, and had no action in the field.

The Yankees' bullpen depth beyond the obvious core group is sick. Ben Heller is in now, a guy who basically has no shot at making the team, and he throws 95 and struck out 82 batters in 56 innings at Triple-A last year.

The (unofficial) Giancarlo Stanton Era with the Yankees begins with an eight-pitch walk on a pitch way outside.

Giancarlo Stanton's first spring training plate appearance ends with an eight-pitch walk off Tigers lefty Ryan Carpenter. He fouled off two fastballs, but a changeup was way outside for ball four.

Giancarlo Stanton's first spring training at bat with the Yankees started with a rousing ovation and ended with a walk off Detroit's Ryan Carpenter.

Before today's national anthem at Steinbrenner Field, a moment of silence was held to honor those killed in the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting last week. All during pregame across MLB, players and coaches wore black hats bearing the school's "SD" logo.

As the Yankees announced starting lineups for today's spring opener against the Tigers, Aaron Boone and Giancarlo Stanton received expectedly strong ovations.

Yankees fans coming to Tampa this spring will find several aesthetic and culinary changes at George Steinbrenner Field. One of the most subtle additions is this No. 4, recognizing the legendary Lou Gehrig. The team is slowly adding these monuments here to recognize past captains. Derek Jeter and Thurman Munson's numbers were already standing in the ballpark.
