Pujols, Ohtani eyeing return for Opening Day

Despite being in different stages of both their careers and their respective rehabs, Albert Pujols and Shohei Ohtani are both eyeing a return to the Los Angeles Angels' starting lineup by Opening Day.

Albert Pujols ate healthier over the offseason and showed up looking slimmer despite spending most of the offseason recovering from knee surgery. He has been in Arizona for nearly a week and is hoping to be ready by Opening Day. As for how much 1B he'll play? "Last year we were expecting 30 games and I ended up playing over 100 games, I think (70). It all depends on how I feel and what's best for the team."

Shohei Ohtani said, through his interpreter, that he "would like to make it (back) on Opening Day," even though the Angels are targeting him for May. "That's the thought," Ohtani said. "But I'm not trying to rush myself."

Ohtani progressing but won't be ready for opener

Shohei Ohtani has been making steady progress in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, but he will not be ready by Opening Day, Angels general manager Billy Eppler said on a conference call Thursday.

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

Angels DH/SP Shohei Ohtani will not be ready by Opening Day, GM Billy Eppler said. Ohtani is making progress, however. He has been cleared for full strengthening. The next step after that is dry swings. The Angels, expectedly, will be very careful with his recovery.
