Morris, Trammell make Baseball Hall of Fame

Former Tigers teammates Jack Morris and Alan Trammell were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Modern Baseball Era Committee after previously falling short of induction to Cooperstown.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

The debate over Jack Morris was one of the most contentious in Hall of Fame history, and while the writers ultimately rejected Morris, he's now going to Cooperstown -- and he'll be joined by Alan Trammell, his longtime Tigers teammate. Morris and Trammell were elected by the 16-person Modern Era Ballot committee. Trammell should have been elected long ago, a player who ranked eighth all time among shortstops in WAR. Morris doesn't have much of an analytic case with a 3.90 career ERA, but he does have Game 7 of the 1991 World Series. This time, that was enough to get him the support he needed.

You have to wonder if the heavy lean towards AL contemporaries among the former players voting on the Modern Era Committee didn't help Alan Trammell and Jack Morris finally get into the Hall of Fame in this latest iteration of the Veterans Committee. Trammell was deserving but let down by the BBWAA ballot, while Morris is sure to be one of the most controversial selections of the last 30-plus years.

Players who should be traded for their own good: Miguel Cabrera

After 10 years in Detroit, maybe Miggy is perfectly content to finish out his career in the same place even though the Tigers are just getting started on a rebuild. Still, you'd like to see such an all-time great get a shot at a few more high-stakes games.
