It was a much better second half for UCLA, which easily separated from South Carolina State to win 96-68. Freshman Chris Smith (15 points) was impressive, while G.G. Solomon was plus-33 in 27 minutes.

Two days after needing overtime against lowly Central Arkansas, No. 23 UCLA didn't come out much better against winless South Carolina State. The Bruins led by as many as 13 in the first half, but that lead dipped two just two late in the half before they headed to the locker room up 41-35. Freshman Chris Hill provided a nice spark off the bench with 7 first-half points.

South Carolina State lost at Wisconsin by 35, at Boston College by 39 and at Yale by 32. But the Bulldogs are down just six at half at UCLA.

UCLA C Thomas Welsh on not having the three suspended players tonight and having a second game in which they rotated just eight players: "It's just one of the things you have to work through. The guys we have on the court right now are the guys we have on the court right now. It's just about doing everything you can as a team to get wins and that's we did there tonight so we just learn from that and get ready for the next one."

UCLA G Aaron Holiday on if the player suspensions had an impact -- mentally or physically -- on the Bruins in tonight's 106-101 overtime win over Central Arkansas: "Well, we started off with this against Georgia Tech, so it's pretty much the same. ... At the end of the day, we're all brothers so we're gonna have each other's back no matter what happens. Obviously, it brought us together. We lost three players. We needed to grow as a team, and that's what we did."

UCLA coach Steve Alford on ESPN's report that there is an ongoing internal debate amongst UCLA officials about the proper discipline for LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill after they admitted to shoplifting from three stores while on a team trip to China: "I don't know of any internal debate going on. The indefinite suspension is what it is -- it's indefinite right now until the school goes through what they have to go through. They do that with every student and when that happens then we'll sit down and we'll make the best judgement call we can about the length of that suspension."
