ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Donte Wright scored 20 points, Janai Rayner-Powell scored 18 and got a crucial steal, and South Carolina State slipped past Howard for a 91-88 overtime victory Saturday.
A pair of free throws from Wright with 41 seconds left in overtime gave South Carolina State the lead for good, 89-88, and then Rayner-Powell got a steal, drew the foul and went 2 for 2 from the line to stretch the advantage to three. Howard's Charles Williams missed a 3-pointer at the other end and Ozante Fields hauled in the defensive rebound with eight second left to seal it.
The Bulldogs trailed by 12 at halftime but overtook Howard with 18-for-30 shooting in the second half. Wright finished 9 of 10 from the line, Damani Applewhite had 17 points and James Richardson got 12 for South Carolina State (6-12, 2-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference).
