Of the first 24 names on the leaderboard, 24 are from the United States, including leader Kevin Kisner, who opened with a 5-under 66.

Why win the Claret Jug when you can buy one for only £89.00!?! Betcha the Angus Trophy Centre does engraving as well. Champion Golfer of the Year, ME!!

Bob Harig @BobHarig

Phil Mickelson missed the cut in the two previous Opens at Carnoustie. With one hole to go, he is +2 and has never broken par on the course.

What a summer for those named Southgate! After Gareth's exploits at the World Cup, Matthew shoots two under-par here at Carnoustie in his opening round at The Open. There was no waistcoat, but Southgate looks right at home here, having been a member since he was 16. "I don't think you can know the course much better than I do," Southgate said after his first round 69. "Still I don't know the greens by heart. I'd be lying if I knew every break on every putt, but I'm not far off it." And his tip for the best food in this part of the world? The local Chinese restaurant on the high street.

Danny Willett's 69 at Carnoustie in the opening round: his first score under par in a major since winning the 2016 Masters.

Bob Harig ESPN Senior Writer

Danny Willett's 69 was his first score under par in a major since winning the 2016 Masters. The Englishman is 320th in the world after ending 2017 at 114th. Willett missed the cut at the Masters and U.S. Open this year, but has shown a bit of life recently, tying for sixth at the Irish Open and tying for 19th last week at the Scottish Open.

Bob Harig ESPN Senior Writer

Who is Erik Van Rooyen? Well, for now, he is leading The Open after a 4-under-par 67 at Carnoustie, Van Rooyen, 28, is from South Africa and in his first year on the European Tour. He tied for fourth two weeks ago at the Irish Open and earned his spot in The Open when he finished second at the Joburg Open.

Car-nasty's final three holes have already shown their teeth. The first group of the day has completed 18 holes. Sandy Lyle, Martin Kaymer and Andy Sullivan were a combined level-par through 15 holes yet 4-over for 16 through 18. Only Sullivan avoided dropping a shot on the brutal closing stretch.

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

Phil Mickelson with a ho-hum first nine at The Open. One birdie, one bogey for an even-par 36.

Michael Collins ESPN Senior Writer

Jhonattan Vegas had travel document issues trying to get to the Open. He arrived this morning by helicopter but his clubs didn't make it. He's on the driving range taking the plastic off the new clubs he'll use while his caddie scrambles to find the essentials to put in the new golf bag he'll be carrying.

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

After easing into the day, the big names are hitting the course at The Open. Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler and defending champion Jordan Spieth have all made their way onto Carnoustie.

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

When the weather is perfect in Scotland, no need to walk the course when you can just lounge in the sun.

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

And so begins another Phil Mickelson major championship joy ride. He's off at Carnoustie in one of the few big, big names to start early. Will this week produce as much drama as his Shinnecock Hills adventure?

Nick Pietruszkiewicz ESPN.com

Looking for wind and rain ... you know, the typical Open conditions? They still haven't arrived. A beautifully benign morning in Scotland. So if the players want to take a go at Carnoustie, now is the time.

Steven Saunders ESPN UK

The first shots of the 147th Open have been struck. Sandy Lyle, champion in 1985, leads off the 156 players with an iron to the middle of the first fairway on as perfect a morning for links golf as you could wish for.
