Matt Bush
Matt Bush cut to the quick, and the gold medal, by beating the unbeatables.
Jason Wynyard of New Zealand and two-time champion of the Men's Endurance event had just lost in the semi final round to his brother-in-law, Dion Lane, also of New Zealand, in the highly anticipated match-up of the Men's Endurance Event.

Dion Lane was now up against Matt Bush, of the United States, in the final.

Everyone knew Lane had gone all-out to beat Wynyard, and Bush had given everything he had in his semi-final race against David Bolstad of New Zealand.

Who had the most energy left and the biggest desire to become the Gold Medal winner of the Men's Endurance at the 2002 Great Outdoor Games?

Wynyard watched as Lane stepped off the Underhand a little behind Bush. We all expected Lane to be first to the Standing, but it wasn't so. Bush, a contract logger from Crogan, NY, dug deeper with every swing of the axe to move further ahead. Lane, who had previously dominated the single-saw event after just a few strokes of the saw, in the last discipline of the Endurance event, found the tank was empty.

Matt Bush completed the task at hand, and became the Gold Medal winner.
