One fish, one inch
By Tommy Sanders
Fly Fishing analyst

Chuck Farneth
My favorite moment came early in the day of the Fly Fishing competition on the Ausable River in the 2001 Great Outdoor Games.

Chuck Farneth, who had lost a possible winning fish the year before in the "one fish" type competition, was prospecting the beat, or stretch of the river, that he had drawn for his morning flight competition. There was a tiny slough, or backwater that joined the river just below a riffle. Chuck made a cast or two into it and made a good hookup, which yielded a 16-inch fish.

Landing it was the easy part. Making the decision of whether or not to measure and enter that fish and then wait around through several more hours of fishing was the agonizing part.

Chuck decided to go with the fish, sweated out the stressful wait, then claimed the gold with a victory margin of one inch.
