The opening match of the inaugural AFL Women's season was locked out with a capacity crowd flooding Ikon stadium to catch the clash of traditional rivals Carlton and Collingwood.

Doors were closed during the first quarter with more 20,000 fans in the stadium and thousands more turned away on the street.

AFL chief Executive Gil McLachlan addressed disappointed fans outside the ground who were turned away once police and security determined the ground was at capacity.

The AFL initially scheduled the match at Collingwood's training ground, Olympic Park, but the league was forced to reconsider after an estimated 2000 spectators turned up to a practice match between Collingwood and Melbourne.
