According to NBC's Pierre McGuire, Team USA coach Tony Granato was "furious' with Team OAR's coaches for having their top power play unit on the ice in a 4-0 game with less than two minutes remaining. "Keep putting them on the ice, keep putting them on the ice!" he said, via McGuire. Goal differential is a tie-breaker for seeding in the playoff round bracket. OAR won Group B with this victory, but the idea that any team should take its foot off the accelerator out of concern for another team's feelings is absurd. Or, to put it more succinctly: Don't play a pedestrian 58 minutes if you don't want to be dunked-on in the last two.
The skill disparity between Team USA and Sorta-Russia was blindingly apparent in the second period, and never more glaring than on Ilya Kovalchuk's rocket goal with 0.2 left. Sergei Andronov playing keep-away from Bobby Sanguinetti in the corner, before passing to Kovalchuk, who was given the square acreage of Siberia to shoot by Ryan Gunderson in the 4-on-4. And Ryan Zapolski needed a save there. What a backbreaking goal to make it 3-0. If the USA rallies in this game, after this effort, it would be a mira…uh, a big surprise.
Watching that Nikolai Prokhorkin goal again that made it 2-0 for OAR, Team USA's players had been on the ice for nearly a minute and had done some skating on that shift. They were cooked. Had to find a way to change there, but couldn't. Goalie Ryan Zapolski needed a save there on a shot from the top of the circle, but didn't. U.S. just looking off all game.
