North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham on the notion that the Tar Heels escaped NCAA punishment for vast academic improprieties: "We had some things that occurred that we haven't been proud of. We've been very open and transparent in attempting to follow the various processes we've been involved in … Unfortunately, sometimes the behavior that you're not proud of just doesn't quite fit into a bylaw or a rule or something, and that's what we've been talking about for five years. We're not proud of the behavior, but we didn't think it violated the bylaw."

From the NCAA's July 17 letter to UNC prior to its Committee on Infractions hearing: UNC "student-athletes received access to and assistance in certain courses that was not generally available to other students." That's what North Carolina argued against.

UNC avoids major sanctions in academic case

North Carolina has avoided major sanctions after the NCAA could not conclude the school violated academic rules when it made available deficient Department of African and Afro-American Studies "paper courses" to the general student body.

Mel Kiper Jr. Football analyst

The questions about Mitchell Trubisky coming out of North Carolina were more about experience versus ability. He only started 13 games. Could his performance in those games translate consistently at the next level? Though he hasn't put any points on the board in his NFL debut, Trubisky has been impressive. He can sling it, and he's mobile, too. Bears fans should be encouraged.
